  1. Plot

“Berserk” is a story set in the medieval era of the West with the main character Guts, a boy who thought he was dead from birth but went through countless difficulties such as plagues and wars. His childhood is filled with suffering as he’s considered as the child of evil.

He joins a mercenary band where he finds his passion for wielding a sword. He trains with his sword every day and grows up to become a powerful mercenary. He practiced with the sword every day and when he grew up, Guts became an extremely powerful mercenary.

During his journey, Guts met Griffith, the commander of the mercenary army The Eagle, who invites him to join their group. A battle occurs between the two, and Guts agrees to join the mercenary band.

With Guts’ strength and Griffith’s leadership, the mercenary band becomes increasingly renowned in the kingdom. Guts also had feelings for his female teammate, Caska.

Everything changed when Guts intended to leave The Eagle. Griffith could not accept Guts leaving him. Griffith opened a sacrifice ritual to become the demon king and the people being sacrificed here were Guts and other members of The Eagle.

Although Guts miraculously survives the ritual sacrifice thanks to an unknown savior, he loses an arm, while Caska loses her memory due to shock. Not only that, the two of them were still under the curse of the demons so the demons could come and hunt them down at any time.

It was also from here that Guts began his journey of hunting demons to protect his loved ones. As well as the revenge on Griffith officially begins.

  1. Reviews

The first chapters of the series can make readers feel bored and confused. However, the deeper you read into the series, the more you will realize the attraction it brings.

Starting from Guts’ encounter with Griffith, then getting acquainted and falling in love with Caska, the plot unfolds until Griffith sacrifices his entire mercenary band, including Guts’ friends, and rapes Casca.

You’ll be stunned by the unexpected twists and turns, and the story will push your emotions to extremes, making you want nothing more than to see Guts “kill Griffith” in situations like Griffith’s rape of Casa and the sacrifice of his entire team.

Another great aspect of the Berserk story is that the main character (Guts) isn’t always the central focus in each chapter. Throughout the series, almost all characters, whether minor or major, receive a significant amount of depth to supplement their own stories.

These side stories are not only unique and exceptionally well-developed but also profound and revealing as they show readers the reasons behind each character’s actions.

One of the most intriguing side stories that I find compelling is the story of Farnese and Serpico because it’s beautifully crafted as part of the entire manga.

The artwork of the series is one of its most notable aspects, often being compared to some of the most beautiful manga of all time. This achievement is due to the series’ focus on depicting the surroundings and emotions of the characters in a way that makes readers feel like they’re experiencing the dark world themselves.

Not only that, the battle scenes between Guts and the monsters are described extremely satisfying, intense, and detailed manner, ensuring that you’ll be amazed by both the beauty and grandeur of the series.
